What is a uterine myoma

Myoma is localized in the muscular wall of the organ, and it can be attached to its outer wall and grow into the peritoneum, located in the wall itself or in the uterine cavity. The neoplasm is benign and often causes no symptoms.

Myomas can consist of:

• of muscle tissue;
• connective;
• of tissue with good vascularity.

The mass may also form multiple nodules and grow rapidly. The largest myoma reached a weight of 9 kg!

Myoma is a hormone-dependent tumor, meaning it responds to levels of certain hormones. Therefore, the disease often affects women of reproductive age and much less frequently affects patients in menopause.

Symptoms

Small myomas do not cause any discomfort. But as they grow, they cause common symptoms:

• heavy and prolonged bleeding during periods;
• pain during menstruation;
• pressure, sometimes pain in the lower back and abdomen;
• urinary problems, constipation;
• Enlargement of the lower abdomen, which feels like hard lumps.

Most often myomas are detected at a routine gynecological examination, so you should not miss visits to the doctor.

Diagnosis

Treatment of uterine myoma

If the patient is approaching menopause, the gynecologist will advise a wait-and-see tactic. After menopause, myoma growth is likely to stop. Conservative therapy only works with tumors that do not cause symptoms.

In case of multiple nodes, large size of myoma, other diseases (endometriosis, ovarian tumor) or severe pain due to the neoplasm, surgery is indicated.

There are several options:

1. Myoma excision only. Allows for future pregnancies because the uterine tissue is not affected. This type of surgery is performed only for certain tumor sizes.
2. Complete removal of the uterus. A radical measure that is used when the risk of myoma complications is high.
