Treatment methods
The goal of this method is to relieve symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life. This may involve pain relief, cough management, and maintaining respiratory function.
If the cyst is dangerously located or malignancy is suspected, surgery may be required. Doctors may perform surgery to completely remove the cyst. The procedure can be performed using open surgery (thoracotomy) or minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic bronchoscopy. The goal of surgical removal is to eliminate the cyst and prevent recurrence.
A bronchogenic cyst is a fluid-filled cavity that forms in the bronchial tubes of the lungs. It can vary in size and be located in either one or both lungs. These cysts can be congenital (develop from birth) or acquired (appear later in life).
Patients may experience a chronic cough, which can be particularly bothersome if the cyst is close to the bronchi. Large cysts or cysts that block the airway can cause difficulty breathing, especially with physical activity. Some patients may experience chest pain or discomfort.
Diagnosis at MDI Clinic
CT scans provide more detailed images of the lungs and cysts, determining their exact size and location. Bronchoscopy: This is a procedure in which a flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the airway to visually inspect the bronchi and determine the location and nature of the cyst. A biopsy may be performed under bronchoscopy guidance.
MRI may be used to further evaluate the cyst and its effect on surrounding tissues. Once a cyst is detected by bronchoscopy, tissue samples may be taken for biopsy to determine its nature and rule out malignancy.
Radiologic examination with labeling: This treatment method is rarely used, but can be used for small cysts in hard-to-reach areas. It involves injecting a special fluid that hardens and blocks the cyst.
