Treatment methods
Patients at MDI Clinic may be prescribed medications, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or aldosterone antagonists, to control blood pressure and hormone levels.
If the secondary disease state is due to other causes, such as renal artery stenosis or a tumor outside the adrenal gland, the first priority is to treat the underlying disease. This may include surgery to restore normal blood flow to the kidneys or treatment of a tumor.
One of the most common types of the condition is primary hyperaldosteronism, caused by the presence of an adenoma (tumor) in the adrenal cortex. This leads to an excessive release of aldosterone.
In rare cases, the disease may be caused by hyperplasia, or hypertrophy, of the adrenal cortex. This condition is characterized by overgrowth of adrenal gland tissue, which also leads to increased aldosterone release.
Sometimes tumors outside the adrenal glands can secrete aldosterone. This is called a secondary condition and can be caused by tumors in the kidneys or other diseases. In some cases, the cause of the disease remains unknown.
Diagnosis at MDI Clinic
Doctors prescribe tests that assess the ratio of aldosterone to renin in the body. Elevated levels indicate the presence of disease.
Magnetic resonance imaging or CT scans are then recommended to determine if there is a neoplasm in the adrenal glands.
One of the mandatory steps of the examination is the salt load test. Salt is injected into the body and the hormone and potassium levels in the urine are measured. It’s usually elevated in patients.
Treatment of the disease should be supervised by a physician, and patients should have their blood pressure and blood potassium levels checked regularly. Regular medical examinations allow the therapies to be adjusted if necessary.
