The main cause of the disease can be called premature fusion of the sutures in the skull. They are usually left open to allow the infant’s brain to grow and develop. This deficiency is genetic in nature. Gene mutations, environmental exposures, and infections can cause disease.

Specialists examine infants at once. They evaluate the shape of the skull, the size of the head, and the presence of asymmetry. The examination also includes evaluation of other signs such as the presence of protruding bones or ocular orbital asymmetry.

Magnetic resonance angiography provides detailed images of the skull and allows doctors to determine exactly how the sutures have fused. CT scans are one of the most informative ways to diagnose craniostenosis.

Magnetic resonance therapy is used to look at soft tissue and the brain in more detail. This method can be useful in evaluating the presence of pressure on the brain and other associated abnormalities.

Ultrasound may be used in newborns to evaluate cranial sutures. It provides images of the brain skeleton and determines if there is evidence of craniostenosis. X-rays can be useful in assessing the structure of the skull, although they are less informative than CT and MRI scans.
