What happens in sarcoidosis

Granulomas, which are composed of immune cells from the body, spontaneously arise in organs. It is thought to be due to an overreaction of the immune system to infections, bacteria or fungi, metals, pollen.

Granulomatous tissue may overgrow, compressing or replacing neighboring tissues. If there is a lot of such tissue, the organ stops functioning properly, which causes symptoms. In some cases, sarcoidosis is not only asymptomatic but also self-cured.

Is sarcoidosis dangerous?

Depends on the form of the disease. When it affects multiple systems or organs, symptoms are observed:

  1. Pulmonary sarcoidosis. Shortness of breath, chest pressure, enlarged lymph nodes, fever.
  2. Sarcoidosis of the heart. Pain in the heart area, shortness of breath during physical exertion, in severe cases arrhythmia or heart failure.
  3. Sarcoidosis of the eye. Visual acuity decreases, eye pain. Can lead to secondary glaucoma.

Granulomas also affect the lymph nodes, skin, GI tract, and nervous system. And depending on that, the patient will have different symptoms. If the lesions are severe, they lead to organ failure and, afterward, to death.

Diagnosis

In many cases, sarcoidosis is detected on routine lung x-rays. If the patient does not complain of deterioration, the doctor will choose a wait-and-see approach.

Diagnosis of sarcoidosis is not easy and requires a highly qualified pulmonologist. He needs to make a differential diagnosis, that is, rule out other problems that may have caused similar symptoms.
