Treatment methods
At first, the disease is bought conservatively, that is, with various medications. An important part of therapy is diet. Medications help to achieve long periods of calm with rare exacerbations.
If ulcerative colitis spreads or if the course is severe, the decision is made to operate – coloproctectomy. The surgeon removes the affected parts of the colon, anus, and rectum. Feces is excreted through a stoma into a fecal liner.
Radical treatment is indicated only in severe cases, especially in the presence of tissue malignancy. Reconstruction is not always possible, so the patient will have to use a colostomy bag for life.
In the disease, the mucosal lining of the large intestine is affected. Usually starting in the rectum, it spreads upward to cover most of the intestine and is accompanied by inflammation, sometimes even purulent masses. As a result, ulcers may appear on the walls of the mucosa.
This disease is characterized by periods of exacerbations and a relatively quiet course. However, when inflammation advances deep into the intestinal tissues, perforation can occur, in which the intestinal contents enter the abdominal cavity, which can lead to sepsis and death.
Patients with chronic colitis have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer after ten years, especially if there are large areas of damage to the organ. Signs of colitis can manifest as both intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations, with the latter most often appearing earlier. These symptoms include skin rash, weakness, tachycardia, photophobia.
Diagnosis at MDI Clinic
In the early stage of the disease, its symptoms are nonspecific, which complicates preliminary diagnosis. Therefore, a quality diagnosis is necessary with tests, coprogram, screening, ultrasound and other methods that allow you to determine the location and degree of lesions of the intestinal walls.
Treatment for ulcerative colitis includes conservative methods such as drug therapy and diet to help control symptoms and prevent exacerbations. Radical treatment may be necessary only in severe cases, especially when malignant changes are suspected.
