The nature of neurinoma

The exact reasons for the development of schwannomas are unknown. It has been suggested that they may be caused by a mutation in certain genes, as well as neurofibromatosis, an inherited disease that causes benign tumors to grow in the body.

Symptoms of a neurinoma tumor

Symptoms depend directly on the localization of the tumor. If it is located on nerves deep in the body, no symptoms are felt. Sometimes the patient experiences discomfort only when the neoplasm reaches a significant size.

The most dangerous neurinomas are tumors in the nerves of the brain and spinal cord. The schwannoma grows and begins to press on other nerves or structures. For example, in neurinoma of the auditory nerve there is hearing impairment, facial nerve – dry eyes, lacrimation or paresis of the eyelids. In spinal cord neurinoma, pain, decreased muscle strength and sensation are felt. Therefore, the symptomatology is very different depending on the localization of the tumor.

Before the doctor finds out the patient’s complaints and, based on the collected anamnesis, prescribes certain tests. If schwannoma of the auditory nerve is suspected, an audiogram is prescribed, optic nerve – vision diagnostics, etc. To determine the size and exact location of the tumor, MRI will be the most effective – it detects tumors of any size.

The effective treatment for neurinoma is surgery. It has a connective tissue capsule, which allows the neoplasm to be completely separated from the nerve without damaging it.
