Laryngectomy – removal of the larynx is used in the last stages of cancer when the tumor has spread. Perhaps an opening for breathing will be created instead of a larynx.

In a partial laryngectomy, only the affected parts of the larynx are removed, but vocal function is preserved. Surgeons often perform microlaryngoscopic resection – removing the tumor through minimally invasive techniques using a laser or micro-instruments.

In external beam radiation therapy, high-energy rays target the tumor from the outside to destroy cancer cells. The essence of internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy) is the injection of radioactive sources through special catheters.

In systemic chemotherapy, anti-cancer drugs are administered through a vein. They spread throughout the body. Inhibitors block the growth and multiplication of cancer cells, target specific molecular targets.

Targeted therapy blocks proteins that suppress the immune response, helping to activate the immune system to fight cancer cells.

Once a diagnosis is made, the most appropriate treatment plan is chosen, which may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Regular checkups after treatment are important to monitor your health and prevent recurrence.

Hoarseness or complete loss of voice may be the first signs. Pain or discomfort when swallowing may be due to an enlarged tumor. Pain in the larynx or neck area, as well as in the ear area, may be associated with the spread of cancer. The occurrence of chronic coughing or difficulty in breathing may be associated with vocal cord damage.

One of the major risk factors is smoking, which can cause changes in the vocal cords. Drinking alcohol in large amounts can increase the risk of developing laryngeal cancer. Vocal cord problems appear with age and if there is a genetic predisposition.

Diagnosis of vocal cord cancer

The MDI Clinic physician will interview the patient to identify symptoms, when they occur, and risk factors. Examination of the larynx using a special mirror allows you to assess visible changes.

Laryngoscopy involves inserting a flexible or rigid tube with a video camera through the nose or mouth to examine the larynx and vocal cords. If there are suspicious changes, a biopsy – a tissue sample for detailed examination under a microscope – is taken. It is performed with a special needle or surgically.

CT and MRI scans can be used to accurately determine the size of the tumor, its structure and spread. Positron emission tomography (PET) scans can reveal areas of increased cancer cell activity. Ultrasound can help evaluate lymph nodes in the neck area for metastases.

After treatment, rehabilitation is important, including classes with a speech therapist to restore the voice, and physical exercises to restore laryngeal function. Psychological support helps patients cope with the emotional aspects of treatment.
