Signs of intestinal polyps

Small polyps do not give any symptoms and are detected incidentally when the colon is examined. Sometimes the patient is bothered:

• a small amount of blood in the feces, sometimes hidden, that is, not noticeable;
• abdominal pain;
• constipation and diarrhea.

There are two reasons why benign polyps can be dangerous. The first is that they overgrow and close the lumen of the intestine. This causes intestinal obstruction.

The second is the transformation of benign tumors into cancer. Polyps often degenerate with comorbidities: Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis. It is important to diagnose the neoplasms and determine their nature.

Diagnosis

First, the doctor listens to the patient’s complaints, collects anamnesis. Next, diagnostics are performed. Phase One:

1. A stool sample for latent blood.
2. Colonoscopy.
3. Intestinal MRI.
4. Gastroenterology consultation
5. Blood tests + Urine

These studies will help the clinic’s doctors “MDI” identify the location of all polyps, estimate their size. During colonoscopy, polyps are immediately removed with simultaneous tissue sampling for histologic analysis. This is the second stage of diagnosis, where the benign or malignant nature of the neoplasm becomes clear.

Treatment of intestinal polyps

Colonoscopy is a method of both diagnosis and treatment. The doctor removes all polyps during the procedure. If malignancy is confirmed after a cancer test, removal of the affected tissue and oncologic treatment are prescribed. In this case, the patient is seen by several specialists.

In benign polyps, surveillance is mandatory because they can recur. The patient undergoes a prophylactic colonoscopy as prescribed by the physician.
