Autoimmune hepatitis
HepatologyAutoimmune hepatitis is considered a rare but serious liver disease characterized by the immune system attacking and damaging its own cells. In chronic disease inflammation, organ function is impaired and cirrhosis develops if you do not get timely treatment.
Treatment methods
The main therapy is usually the administration of glucocorticosteroids such as prednisolone. It suppresses immune system activity and reduces inflammation in the liver. The dose starts high and then gradually decreases to a minimum maintenance dose that allows remission to be maintained.
Sometimes the disease may continue to progress despite therapy. A liver transplant may be performed. This procedure is done for cirrhosis of the liver or other severe complications.
Patients feel weak and tired with little physical activity. They develop a yellowish coloring of the skin and sclerae (whites of the eyes) due to high bilirubin in the blood. This is one of the characteristic signs of the disease. There is often discomfort and pain in the liver area.
There is a genetic predisposition where immune cells – T-lymphocytes and antibodies, are directed against liver cells.
Women are more susceptible to the disease than men. It is caused by hormonal changes, during pregnancy and menopause.
People with systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis are much more likely to get autoimmune hepatitis.
Diagnosis at MDI Clinic
The specialist performs an extensive physical examination of the patient, including palpation of the abdomen to assess the size of the liver and spleen. It is mandatory to examine the eyes to detect a ring in the cornea.
Blood tests are used to determine bilirubin, enzymes (transaminases), immune markers and antibodies specific to the disease. Ultrasound visualizes the liver and reveals changes in size and structure. The magnetic resonance machine allows a detailed evaluation of the biliary tracts and ducts.
