Patients may be prescribed medications to control the risk of factors that contribute to stroke, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. Medications can also be used to manage symptoms such as vascular spasms and pain.

In some cases, surgery may be needed to unblock arteries that are narrowed or blocked. Angioplasty and stenting procedures allow doctors to widen narrowed vessels with special balloons and implant stents to keep the blood vessels open.

Rehabilitation plays a key role in stroke recovery. Physical therapy, speech therapy, and working with rehabilitation therapists help the patient regain lost skills and functions. Rehabilitation program is developed individually, taking into account the peculiarities of each patient

Ischemic strokes are caused by disruptions in the blood supply to the brain caused by blocked blood flow or blockage from one cerebral artery.

The formation of a thrombus (clot) in a cerebral artery can block blood flow and cause a stroke. Narrowing of the cerebral artery due to atherosclerosis (deposition of cholesterol and other substances on the walls of the arteries) can impair the blood supply to the brain.

Diagnosis at MDI Clinic

The doctor begins by interviewing the patient or close relatives to learn about the symptoms and their dynamics. It is important to find out if the patient has had any diseases related to the cardiovascular system. This applies to arrhythmias, high blood pressure, and diabetes mellitus.

A CT scan is done to rule out the presence of a hemorrhagic stroke (associated with hemorrhage). CT scans can also show areas of the brain with compromised blood supply, but they may not be sensitive enough for early diagnosis.

General blood tests can be performed to assess glucose levels and other biochemical parameters that trigger the occurrence of stroke. A cardiac study may be performed to detect abnormalities in cardiac function that provoke embolism.
