Symptoms of the disease can vary depending on the size and location of the tumor. They are often unnoticeable in the early stages, but may worsen over time.

Because of the tumor’s effect on the vestibular nerve, patients may experience problems with balance and coordination. This can lead to dizziness and uncertainty in movement. The disease can affect the facial nerve, resulting in muscle weakness on one side of the face.

The neurosurgeon begins the examination by clinically examining the patient, talking about their symptoms and medical history. Next, audiometry, a specialized hearing test that can help detect hearing loss associated with the disease, is performed. The patient is asked to listen to sounds of different intensities and frequencies through headphones and then record the results on a graph.

Magnetic resonance therapy can be used to accurately determine the size and location of the tumor, as well as its relationship to surrounding tissues and nerves. In some cases, CT scans may be an additional diagnostic method. This study also provides images of the brain and tumor, but it is less informative compared to the previous method.

Electroneuromyography is performed to assess nerve and muscle function, especially if the disease causes weakness of the facial muscles. The examination can be used to assess the electrical activity of muscles and nerves.
