Injuries are also a cause of the disease. This includes improper weight lifting, car accidents, falls, or sports injuries that can damage the discs and trigger a herniated disc.

Repetitive motion or strain, especially with improper lifting and carrying of objects, also contributes to disc wear and tear and herniated discs. Genetic predisposition plays a role and some people may have inherited structural features.

The symptomatology of the disease varies with the place of localization, but most often manifests itself by painful sensations. They can be sharp, radiating or blunt sensations and are usually intensified by movement. In some cases, the sciatic nerve is pinched and irradiating pain in the leg occurs.

A hernia can also weaken the muscles. In some cases, a herniated disc can damage the surrounding nerves, resulting in decreased sensation in the area in question.

Diagnosis at MDI Clinic

Diagnostic measures use a variety of methods, including a physical examination by a physician who evaluates symptoms and performs reflex tests.

Magnetic resonance imaging, which provides detailed images of the spine, as well as CT scans and X-rays may be performed to obtain more detailed information. If there is irradiating pain and decreased sensation, electromyography may be required to assess nerve and muscle function.
