Used to kill cancer cells in the body with drugs that affect their division and growth. Chemotherapy may be given before or after surgery.

External beam radiation therapy is used to destroy the tumor using high-energy rays directed at the affected area.

Internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy) involves placing radioactive sources directly into the tumor, providing a more precise exposure.

Depending on the size and spread of the tumor, doctors may remove the affected salivary glands and surrounding tissue. If there are metastases in the lymph nodes, lymphadenectomy is performed – removal of the affected areas.

Microsurgical techniques include rganosuppressive surgeries, including salivary gland reconstruction, are used to preserve function and aesthetics.

Symptoms of salivary gland cancer may include swelling or thickening in the salivary gland area, pain or discomfort when chewing, feeling nodules or lumps under the skin, swelling of the face or neck, fatigue, and weight loss for no apparent reason.

The risk of the disease increases with age, especially after the age of 60. Smoking tobacco in any form increases the likelihood of developing cancer not only of the salivary glands but also of other organs.

Excessive alcohol consumption is also associated with an increased risk of the disease. High dose radiation to the head and neck may increase the risk of salivary gland cancer. Certain genetic syndromes and chronic salivary gland diseases may be associated with increased risk.

Diagnosis of salivary gland cancer

The doctor conducts a visual inspection, assesses the condition of the face, neck, soft tissues in the area of salivary glands. The patient talks about symptoms, chronic conditions, and risk factors.

Ultrasound allows you to assess the size of the tumor, its structure, and its relationship to surrounding tissues. Magnetic resonance imaging provides detailed images to help determine tumor spread and metastasis.

A CT scan provides a clearer view of the tumor’s structure and its interaction with surrounding organs. Positron emission tomography (PET-CT) can assess tumor activity and detect even early metastases.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy examines the chemical composition of the tumor, adding information about its nature. Examination of a tissue sample taken from a tumor can accurately diagnose cancer and determine its type.

General and biochemical blood tests help to identify changes in the body associated with the disease. Endoscopy allows you to examine the inside of the salivary glands, clarify the nature of the tumor and disease. Radiography is used to detect metastases in the lungs and bones.
