Why retinoblastoma occurs

The main cause is a mutation in the RB1 gene, known as the retinoblastoma gene. A cell in the retina begins to divide, forming a tumor. There are 2 types of retinoblastoma:

  1. Sporadic. The mutation occurs on its own in the child of parents without the gene mutation. Affects most often only one eye.
  2. Hereditary. The gene mutation is inherited, in which case there is often damage to the retina of both eyes. Children with this type of retinoblastoma are also prone to other cancers.

The tumor is diagnosed before 3 years of age, with a maximum of 5 years of age. Adolescents and adults rarely get retinoblastoma.

Symptoms

Signs of tumor in the early stages are similar to other ophthalmic diseases:

  1. Strabismus.
  2. Heterochromia – one of the irises is colored a different color.
  3. Decreased visual acuity.
  4. Cat-eye effect. Visible in a flash photo: instead of red eyes, a whitish tint to the pupil appears.

When the tumor enlarges, intraocular pressure increases, leading to nausea and vomiting. There can be eye pain, redness. It is important to have a diagnosis by a pediatric ophthalmologist – at the clinic “MDI will perform the exam in a way that is comfortable for the young patient.

Diagnosis

The main method is to examine the retina with a slit lamp.

For children, it is performed under anesthesia. It is mandatory to apply drops that dilate the pupil.

To localize the tumor, to determine the size of the tumor, they appoint

  1. ULTRASOUND,
  2. MRI and CT scans.

Retinoblastoma is a malignant tumor, meaning that altered retinal cells can travel to other structures of the eye and beyond. Cerebrospinal fluid and bone marrow tests are taken to look for markers of cancer.

Since retinal cancer is malignant, early diagnosis will not only help save your vision but also save your life. A great responsibility falls on parents: at any symptoms of eye disease, you should contact a pediatric ophthalmologist.

The main goal is to preserve vision while preventing the tumor from possibly spreading. Removal of the eye is considered a drastic measure, but will help preserve the ability to see and prevent metastasis.
