Treatment methods
What happens in COPD
In chronic obstruction, the small airways are affected, resulting in impaired air circulation. The person develops shortness of breath and a chronic cough. As the disease progresses, breathing becomes more difficult, impairing quality of life and even requiring hospitalization.
Two conditions are often identified in patients with COPD: chronic obstructive bronchitis (COPD) and emphysema.
In COPD, the airways narrow, making it difficult for air to pass through. Emphysema is the destruction of the spongy tissue of the lung, the parenchyma. The walls of the alveoli are thinning. Due to the disruption of the lung structure, the breathing process is impaired.
Causes of COPD
The most common is smoking, both active and passive. Also, the disease can develop with constant inhalation of dust, smoke, chemical vapors, small particles in woodworking plants, etc.
Obstruction develops early in life due to abnormalities in fetal development, lung infections, asthma, or rarely due to a genetic disorder.
Diagnosis of the disease
If the disease is detected in the early stages, irreversible consequences can be avoided. Therefore, it is very important to see a qualified pulmonologist. In Israel at a clinic “MDI is staffed by pulmonologists with extensive experience, and there are diagnostic capabilities for early detection of COPD:
- Lung X-rays.
- CT.
- Spirometry.
- Cytologic examination of sputum.
- Diffusion test.
The doctor may order other examinations to clarify the degree of obstruction.
COPD is easier to prevent than to cure, so WHO recommends quitting smoking, taking care of your respiratory health, and avoiding environments with highly polluted air.
