Prof. Shmuel Banai is a cardiologist, cardiac surgeon, and a world-renowned specialist. He has been successfully engaged in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular diseases for 35 years. Over the years, he has returned health to thousands of patients suffering from coronary blockages, congenital heart defects, heart valve problems and other cardiovascular pathologies.
In his work, Prof. Banai uses the latest cardiac diagnostic tools, such as diagnostic catheterization, which allows the detection of diseases at the earliest stages.
The professor utilizes the most innovative treatment methods. In particular, with the help of therapeutic catheterization, he masterfully performs aortic valve replacement, installs the latest, including self-dissolving, stents and balloons that prevent blockage and narrowing of coronary vessels.
Shmuel Banai received an excellent education, graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He then gained professional experience as a military doctor in the tank brigade of the Israel Defense Forces. After his service, he interned for many years at major hospitals in the United States and Israel.
Today, Shmuel Banai heads the coronarography department at the Israel Hospital. A sought-after teacher, he lectures at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He was named a top teacher in 1992, 1994, 1995, 2004 and 2005. Dr. Shmuel Banai was awarded the title of Professor for his teaching and research work at the Universities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
In addition to clinical and teaching activities, Shmuel Banai is seriously engaged in research. He is the author of 150 scientific papers, highly appreciated by the world’s leading specialists in the field of cardiology. Under his leadership and direct personal participation, an international group of scientists developed a unique hourglass-shaped Reducer stent, which is implanted into the vein with the help of a catheter. It is a safe method for treating chronic angina by increasing pressure in the coronary sinus (the vein that drains blood from the heart muscle). The invention of Prof. Banai and his assistants is officially used in Israel and in several European countries.
In addition, several years ago, Israel began to introduce the latest technology in the field of invasive cardiology “Watchman” – a safe and highly effective tool for the treatment and prevention of ischemic stroke.
These and other latest achievements of modern cardiology and cardiac surgery are successfully applied today at the Assuta Clinic.
